The Happiness Butterfly

Filed under: Philosophy — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Yesterday at lunch, I took out my lawn chair out of the back of the Beetle and sat on the grass behind the tree. I don’t think anyone at work could see me because I parked in the neighboring business’s parking lot and I hid behind the huge evergreen that shades my car so well by the time I go home. I ate a snack and let my bare legs get some sun and just listened to the roar of I-15.

A cabbage butterfly was enjoying the grass and bushes and flew so close to me that it felt like a pet. It reminded me of something that the Jehovah Witnesses liked to talk about. They had a saying about happiness. It went something like this: Happiness is like a butterfly. If you chase after it, it will fly away, but if you stay still it will come and alight on your shoulder.

It’s the biggest load of crap. There are tons of you reading my blog every day. If you have ever once had a butterfly alight on you, I want you to leave a message. In all of my days of staying still and waiting for them, I have never once had a bloody butterfly land on me. Ladybugs? Yes. Flys? Hell, yes! Butterflies? Not once.

Now, before you go screeching “allegory” at me, I don’t believe it either. Happiness isn’t something that just comes to you without looking. You have to be diligent. You have to make careful choices. One bad choice can upset your happiness for the rest of your life. Don’t just sit around waiting for happiness to come to you. Get off your ass and chase the sucker. Get a freaking net. Set a trap. Do whatever you need to do to catch that happiness because life is for the go-getters.

The paranoid in me thinks that the “Happiness is a Butterfly” saying is just a way to keep their members down. They are told that if they aren’t happy, they need to stay still and quit chasing it. They are told that if they aren’t happy, it’s their own fault for searching for it in the first place. That’s a big load of baloney and I didn’t realize it until today.

I had heard the saying so many times, that I immediately stayed still when I saw the little white butterfly flitting around me yesterday. Something from my childhood kicked in and I thought, “If the butterfly lands on me, then I’ll be happy.” That’s how often that saying was said to me as a child. Butterflies represent happiness to me far more than any other symbol.

Needless to say, this butterfly didn’t alight on my shoulder. That doesn’t mean I’m not happy, it just means that butterflies don’t land on human beings because we don’t have any nectar. If only I could naturally produce nectar, then I’d be happy.

  1. It looks like Hawthorne deserves the blame for this one.

Happiness is a butterfly, which, when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you. — Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804 – 1864)

  2. It’s not Hawthorne’s fault that the Jehovah Witnesses pounded one beautiful thought that he had into my brain over and over. Poor guy. Must be turning in his grave every time they quote him.

  3. While at an outdoor event I had a monarch butterfly land and stayed with me for a long period of time, it disappeared then found me again! I have pictures to prove. I was pretty neat, as a child trying to catch one was difficult

  4. I found this blog today simply because I was looking for information on the possibility of a butterfly landing on you.

I have had a thought for quite some time that butterflies are almost like little spirits, bringing messages of love. I have had two experiences where a close relative has died, and within a few days of this happening, while out running and thinking of these people, I have been touched both times, by a passing butterfly, one even during wild winds!!

Today I stood with my 10 year old Son and looked at a butterfly above us. I told him to hold his hand out and gently call for it to come to us. Not only did it fly around until it felt comfortable to land on his outstretched hand, it stayed around for about 20 minutes, flying around our heads, back and forth from a branch on a tree, then back to his hand a second time!! It was the most unbelievable experience, and all my motivational talk to my children about “positive thinking” and “creating reality through postive thought” paid off BIG TIME!! Just to see his face, light up when it landed after calling to him was worth more than words can say!

  5. I just googled’ butterfly landing on you’ to see if it means good luck. I was just standing outside work smoking and soaking up some rays and a big black and yellow butterfly landed on my shoulder. It took off when I took a drag on my smoke and then came back and landed again. Just an FYI.

  6. Yes, butterflies do land on people. My mamma promised me one would do just that very soon and bring happiness. And so, it did. I was at working cleaning the pool and bam! It landed on my forehead and stayed for about 20 minutes. I just relaxed, cherished the moment and meditated on this rare blessing. Does it bring goodluck or happiness? I’ll let ya know!

  11. I just experienced a butterfly landing on my shirt near my waist. I was surprised and it made me feel good, special. There was actually two flying around above my head, playing with each other. I didn’t now what it meant so I decided to look it up. I’ve had some problems lately and a little bit of happiness is something I can use. Sure hope that’s what it means.

  12. On the way back down from the top of the waterfall a small yellow clouded butterfly landed on my heart I just stood there in awe! This is the second time this month that a butterfly landed on my heart… The 1st time I was out at the river tanning on a hot rock and a beautiful big yellow swallowtail landed on my heart I couldn’t believe it, it was the most awe inspiring experience….

I’d say this whole month was full of butterfly sightings for me as the other night when I looked up in the sky there was perfect white butterfly cloud!!! I’ve never seen a pointed cloud before, let alone in the shape of a butterfly, stranger it seems as I would call myself Mariposa Blanca… meaning white butterfly.

On the 4th of July I told my friend I wanted to see a butterfly in the firework display and she laughed & said right! Well lo & behold a butterfly appeared & she yells there’s your butterfly Maria!

Butterflies symbolize change for me… I think I”m ready for a transformation!

  13. Today I was sitting out back. A monarch Butterfly started flying around me. So close to me I could feel the wind coming from the wings. Then I turned my palm upside down and it slowly flittered down and sat right in the center of my hand. I dont know what it means, if it means anything. All I know is that it was a beautiful experience.

  14. Searching on butterflies tonight, since they always have landed near me and on me most of my life, as one did today, I stumbled upon your blog. I have to say I agree with most of what you say. Happiness just doesn’t fall into your lap…. you have to be happy with yourself and with who you are, and what you were meant to be. I was always told that if butterflies landed on you out of the blue it meant someone close to you who had passed on was around you in spirit. I don’t know for certain that, that is true, but I surely do believe in it. I think that old Hawthorne quote holds true to some degree. Happiness can elude you if you let it…. but I like to believe we can all be happy in our own ways, no matter what or how big or small it may be. I just feel if a butterfly lands on me, I’m just all the more loved, and happier for it. :) Love this blog, so I faved it! have a great day. Many blessings….

  16. Last Thursday I had a monarch butterfly land on my hand of its own accord while I was getting ready to leave work. The butterfly first flew past me and then turned around and landed on my hand. It was relatively windy that day, and the butterfly had to hold on tightly (which is did). It stayed on my hand for 20 minutes or more! I even put a picture of it up on flickr and called it My Numinous Experience. It was awesome! One of my first thoughts was that it was my Dad’s spirit coming to visit, and that filled me with happiness! Yes, I too will remember this magical time forever!!

  17. A friend, whose mother had recently died, commented at a luncheon that she believed her mother was visiting her in the form of a yellow butterfly. No one commented negatively.

Several days later, after having misplaced her car keys and unable to find them, she was sitting on her sidewalk trimming a small hedge when a yellow butterfly landed on her shoulder. It then flew to the area in front of her dining room window. Twice repeated, she got up and went to the window – herr keys were on the ground there. She was then convinced it was indeed the spirit of her mother who led her there.

  19. Today when I walked of church a butterfly landed on my hip. Stay there. People took noticed. A friend put her hand under it because she said she wanted my blessing. I told her I wanted it back and put my hand under hers and it crawled back to me. I stood pretty still and it was a neat feeling. Why me in this crowd? I walked back inside to show some friends and found it staring back at me. As I walked to my it seemed like a pet with no intention of leaving me. I finally put in off onto a flower where it watched me walk away. I think it was a sign. I have been spending an unusual number of hours in prayer for friends and business clients. I believe this was a message from God that my prayers are being answered. I had a feeling of just knowing. About 15 minutes after I got home and sat down the phone started ringing every 5 minutes. All were answers to some of my prayers for others. I think the point of the butterfly saying regarding stillnes and happiness coming to you, is about having faith. After you’ve done every earthly thing possible to charge after the happiness that you want for yourself, there comes a point when you have to turn you concerns over to God and surrender. If you are truely faithful you will let go, be still and good things will come.

  23. A couple of weeks ago I had 2 butterflies land on my head out in our garden. When I got up and they flew off another came and landed on my pyjamas on my shoulder. Then today I went outside and saw a butterfly flying around so I said in jest “Come on I know you want to land on me” and it flew off – as I looked around for it I eventually looked down and it was sitting on my chest! After these events I too was forced to look for some meaning in these events! I’ve got no idea!

Hi,I dont know how i reached your blog but Im happy i did,and just wanted to share what happened to me today…I was buying italian ices at an ice cream shop while my bf sat and waited in the car,and when I came out, he said “Look!!” A butterfly sat patiently on his lap,and did not move!WOW,we thought..how cute! What does this mean? We drove 1 WHOLE HOUR home and the butterfly never budged!I took numerous pics of this at numerous times! NEVER in life have I encountered an HOUR long drive with a patient butterfly on my partner’s lap, just sitting still and flapping away in the wind of my car at 60 mph with the windows down(very humid today). When we finally reached our destination, the butterfly hung around for a few more minutes, then flew away to find itself some new friends in its new town!!:-) The cutest thing I have ever seen! And I still wish to know the meaning behind it!:-0

That evening while we were out on his deck lounging, when painted butterfly had landed on my shoulder. Two seconds later it flew away and had returned. On the second visit I spoke to the butterfly I breifly studied it’s colorful wings and body. While studying the butterfly I was talking to the butterfly. It took off and returned with another butterfly landing on my hand. Wow!!!! The two butterflies left. We all lifted our heads to the sky and we shall 5 more fluttering above our heads. It was a rare and beautiful experience.

  31. Hi,

I am so glad that I stumbled upon your site. My Dad passed away 2 yrs ago and a couple of days after his passing,I had butterflies all around me. This lasted for about 1 week. I even had one in my car and it rode with me for 45 min. and didn’t budge. I have to say that the butterflies did comfort me and they still do. This past year, My husband and I built a new home and one day we noticed that there were 64 butterfly cocoons on the side of my house, which was also the age of my Dad when he passed away. I just think they are a blessing and I enjoy the moment when they land on me.

I think you get some of you questions answered by reading some of Dr. Wayne Dyer’s books, and Sylvia Browne’s books. Keep an open mind and do not judge, and your questions will be answered.

  34. The other day my daughter and I were coming out of a park field house and we saw a butterfly a few feet away, up about 13 feet high. My daughter since she was about 2yrs old would always pretend she was a butterfly catcher and to this day (she is 5 now) says she wants to be a butterfly catcher when she grows up. I said to her, “look a butterfly, why don’t you try to catch it since you are a butterfly catcher she started to run hesitantly and the butterfly began to circle close around us. Then it landed on my right shoulder. I was surprised and said hi then told my daughter to come closer and take a look. My daughter was a bit freaked out by it and I started walking and the buttley just stayed . At that point I began to feel a bit weird my self so I moved my purse starp on my sam shoulder and it flew away. I half been going through some difficult times and I thought I would google to find out if it had any meaning and here I am.

  39. Where they land actually has little to do with nectar, what it really has to do with is color. Butterflies are attracted to colors. The next time you’re outside and trying to get a butterfly to land on you attempt wearing a bright colored shirt, or a floral pattern to attract them. You’ll see.

  40. I was sitting in a circle of new friends in the grass one day at a party and suddenly, several butterflies came and landed on my shoulders and arm-about 10 of them all at once. They stayed for a few minutes and we all were in awe. It did make me feel special and enlightened. I am somewhat superstitious, but also a skeptic about things, but I felt overwhelmingly happy-and I had no idea what butterflies symbolized at that time. I just started searching online and came across your blog. I think it is just one of those things that happens to people who are not trying or expecting it-like anything else in life, I suppose.

We took photos, it was there until my friend tried to pick it up. Maybe there are scientific explanations for why it chose me and my cup, but it sure made me feel special!!! I have recently finished my 7 year degree and am coming to the end of a two month holiday. I secretly hope my butterfly signifies beautiful things to come.

She told me,after she left this world she wanted to come back as a butterfly, so she could watch over me and my brothers and her grandchildren. Why a butterfly?I asked her.Becouse they are beautiful, graceful, and free.Since her passing ,me and my brothers have butterflies of all different kinds, flutter around us and land on us for several minutes at a time. Its the most wonderful feeling, for all of us.After her suicide,I wondered if her soul was in heaven, and if I would see her beautiful face again. The other day,me and my husband were working outside and butterflies were all around me,We were laughing. They were landing all over me, he said he’s never seen anything like that before he met me.He looked at me and said, That is a sign from the Lord and your mom. I know in my heart now,her beautiful spirit is watching over her children. She is at peace, and we will see her beautiful face again someday. Thank You God!,for creating BUTTERFLYS.

  43. I have had a butterfly land on me on more than one occasion. One time one landed on my head and then decided it liked my eyelashes better. It tickled. I’ve loved butterflies since I was a teen, I’m now in my forties. Another time I was fishing with friends and one of them said you have a butterfly on your shoulder. I said, “I know” because I have a butterfly tattoo on my shoulder. But they told me to look and it was a live one not the tattoo they were talking about. I think that butterfly probably stayed on my shoulder for at least 30 minutes. I tried not to move so it would.

My husband just called me to tell me he had two monarchs land on his shoulder. He wanted to know if it means good luck. That’s why I found your website.

I have another butterfly happening, similar to one someone posted on here. In September of 2002 my ex-husband committed suicide. My kids and I had to travel to another state for the funeral. Anyway I was sitting outside on a swing and I was praying that God give me a sign that my ex was in heaven. I asked for a specific sign, a butterfly. No sooner had I opened my eyes and a few seconds later a butterfly flew right in front of me. Later when I told my daughter about it she got a really funny look on her face. She said, “Mom!, I didn’t have a chance to tell you but earlier I was on the other side of the house praying and asked God to show me that he went to heaven. And a butterfly flew by me!” She told me she didn’t ask specifically for a butterfly but knew it was the sign she asked for since I love butterflies so much.

Butterflies definitely hold a special place in my heart. I have two butterfly tattoos and I have butterfly necklaces, earrings, decorations, etc.

  45. Like so many others, I found your website thanks to Google. About two months ago, I was talking to a friend on the phone about trying to leave my unhappy marriage. This was on a bench outside my recently deceased mother’s apt bldg. A butterfly (monarch?) landed on my shoulder – twice – while talking w/my friend. I asked her if she knew what it meant – I had some recollection of it being good luck. But now reading others’ experiences, I also believe it was my mother encouraging me to do what I need to in order to be happy. Something she desperately wanted to see before she died. I’ll pay more attention to butterflies from now on and welcome them if they choose to land on me.

I let him ride home with me in my jeep he didn’t seem to mind the ride. I let him go. I have pictures and it was at 10:30 pm. I’m 46 and this was the first time in my life that this happened.

But i was wearing a navy polo shirt and navy sport pants up in the AFL grand stand sitting next to a guy friend watching a butterfly make its way up the stand towards me. Then it just landed on my right breast and sat there for about 5 seconds.. was it trying to tell me something? i had many instances as a child when a butterfly would land on my face, or shirt or even hand. But it has been a long time since i felt that beauty and peace from a butterfly landing on me..

  48. A buterfly flew in my front door around 8 PM. It was dark so we thought this was strange, perhaps was a moth that comes out at night. We open doors and windows so it could leave, it flew around and seemed to hide when we tried to make it leave. After 2 hours or so my mother and sister left my house, leaving me alone. As soon as they left the butterfly landed on my right arm and has been there ever since. that was 3 hours ago, it is still on my arm, I went out side hoping it would fly away, it refuses to leave. I showed my sister, she too was amazed. I do not know what this means, I tried to look on the internet to see what type it is exactly, I then decided to look up buuterflies landing on people and came across your site. I am amazed and feel blessed. It appears happy, flapping its wings gently at times, other times is still.

  49. I agree that Happiness isn’t something that just comes to you without looking and You have to be diligent but, everyone must to live without thinking in happiness becouse happiness do not is the target, otherwise, is the way of living. I think The happiness is lack of fear everytime something bad happens. One have to act before the fear, following the own essence, principles. Nowadays I think happiness is “Be good”. When one “is good”, do not betray your own principles to get success in something(The ordinary tonic nowadays).

  50. I once had two white butterflies enter my car through my sunroof and flutter around me. My pasenger smiled and said you will have a good life. He said when a white butterfly crosses your path or enters your home, it will bring good luck and is a sign that you will have a good life.

White butterflies also symbolize past spirits/souls. I’ve come to believe they are signs of good luck or angels watching over you. White butterflies have many different symbolic meanings in different cultures. Some belief it is the soul of child, others beleive it is a sign of death. Regardless of their symbolism, everytime a white butterfly crosses my path or flutters around me, it puts a smile on my face and touches my soul.

  52. Yesterday while at this place here in arkansas called Little Missouri Falls a love interest and I were sitting on a rock in the middle of the stream. There was this little blue and white butterfly. It was flying all around us. Then I held out my hand and it landed on my hand. It continued to walk around and I was even able to shake my hand and it would not fly away. I proceeded to make it walk around from hand to hand. Occasionally it would get spooked and fly up and back down. It was obsessed with my hands and feet. Walking from toe to toe was amazing to watch. Needless to say it was very romantic for my boy and I. Funny kodac moment. Two gay 21 guys sitting on a rock watching a crazy butterfly walk all over the two of them.

To continue my story.. we got up… and it started to follow us along with 2 other butterfly friends.

Very strange moment. I wanted to look up what it meant and that’s how I cam across your page. I’m Alex. I’d like to get some feedback on this; ha-ha! I’ve left my real e-mail and myspace page.

    Blessed Be.

  53. I was out walking my dog the other day and saw a butterfly flitting about above my head. I stretched my arm out and the butterfly came right over and landed on my hand. It just stayed there for a minute or two while I admired it’s beauty. Then it flitted off. It was as if I called the butterfly, and it came. I was so surprised. This has never happened in all my 42 years. I felt special and very blessed that it chose me. I thought this might symoblize something so I did a google search and found your website. I’m still not sure what it means but I found the experience wonderous and beautiful and I will always remember it.

  55. Today, while standing in a field with my co workers and group of children from work, a beautiful yellow and orange butterfly landed on my foot. I didnt even notice until one of my staff saw the flickering wings. We stood there is sheer amazement that this butterfly actually landed on me. I went to move away to follow my group of kids up the path, when the butterfly left my foot and quickly returned. I could not help but stand there and stare at this pure little creature that blessed me with its presence. I had to take a picture because butterflies rarely land on people, I too took it as a sign of happiness. I will forever remember this day, that the beautiful butterfly blessed me.

  56. So, I am sitting on the back deck this morning and 3 butterflies were flying and landing on me while 2 others were flying around…I haven’t had this happen in a really long time…was kind of freaked out, my uncle died about a month later after the first time and my father passed away about 2 years ago, I have had butterflies come close but not like this…I felt like I was in the movie the Birds…I was starting to think it meant death to someone close was coming since my uncle passed away after the first landing, very happy I found your site, many thanks

  60. Yesterday, I was walking in the field with my boyfriend and a butterfly landed on my shoulder, I decided to see whether it would land on my hand if I held it open for it. It came back again and again, until I walked away! I have pictures to prove. :)

  62. I have nearly finished my degree and i am finding it hard to obtain work in my chosen field so i decided to get some assistance from the Government (social security). I did not want to go and i was feeling demoralised and ashamed that i am unable to obtain work.

As i walked the mile of shame, a beautiful yellow butterfly with black/brown patterns landed on my heart. (I was wearing a black knitted cardigan, dark brown T shirt and navy jeans). I smiled. I didnt feel so ashamed anymore.

I really do hope that it meams that my life is going to improve. I have been feeling so depressed lately, no money and a non existent love life.

  63. Butterflies land on me everyday and i have the worst luck in the world and I’m subdued but not happy. I was beaten by my father and even saw him shot when I was five. I have a drunk step father and my mother has cancer and I had to give up my scholarship in basketball to take care of them both, yet butterflies land on me everyday. And this symbolizies that im happy? I think not.

  64. Twenty-four years ago, while sitting outside with my parents, a butterfly circled my dad several times. Mom shooed it away as she believed that butterflies meant “a new life” which could be perceived as “death” of the one you have now. The butterfly was insistent and circled until it landed on my dad’s shoulder, much to my mother’s horror. Six days later, my father died unexpectedly from a massive heart attack. Today, a small white butterfly landed on my sneaker and was quite content to just sit there. I told my husband that if I die this week, not to be surprised! However, after reading other posts of butterflies landing on people, I am trying to believe that my father’s death after the butterfly experience was just a coincidence…at least I hope so!

  65. I was just out walking my dogs. We stopped at a coffee shop and I drank some chamomile tea, and then we started walking home on South Lamar, a busy street in Austin, TX. It’s a bright sunny day today and I was in good spirits as we walked along. Amber, my English Beagle, jumped up to try to catch a butterfly that had been following us. The butterfly evaded her, and without even thinking about it, I transferred both leashes to my right hand, and I calmly reached out with my left hand and the butterfly alighted on my palm and I walked with it for several blocks, marveling at how well it clung to my palm even though the wind blew its orange and black wings hither-thither. It did not leave me until I started having a conversation with a neighbor in passing. I was curious to see what it might mean which is why I googled it. Apparently, nobody knows, probably because the nature of the butterfly is transformation itself. My instinct tells me that change is in the air.

  67. A few weeks ago I was unlocking the door to my Massage business and as I was walking in a butterfly landed on my shoulder and stayed with me as I walked inside. I opened the door and he flew back outside. Then the other day, I was sitting outside reading a book and a butterfly kept coming over and landing on a page of my book resting for a while. I figure, either there is some significance to these butterfly visits, or butterflies just like massages and reading vampire novels ;)

  68. Today, while sitting in my yard, a beauty butterfly landed on me. I was taken back, and felt some sort of spirit. I said maybe that was Gods angels looking in on my and reminding me that they are with me all along. I am going through a difficult passage in my life, losing my home and no job and poor health. I was admiring the garden that I have created 20 years ago, and maybe God sent the butterfly to remind I will have better the next time around. When I shared it with my girlfriend she siged so quickly and said oh it is good luck. I hope so.
