How to Write a Legend

Filed under: Musings on Being a Writer — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

It showed up on my search string statistics. Thirteen people found me by typing the phrase, “how to write a legend” into a search engine. I did the same and it’s true, I show up as first in line for that phrase. The others that show up on that list don’t even talk about writing and even my entry didn’t answer the question.

If I were to give advice to others about how to write a legend, what would I say?

Quite frankly, I’m sick of most of the “legends” out there. It seems like most of them are trying to recreate Tolkien or the Greek Myths. I want a legend that is set in present time. I want something unique and different.

For me, legends NEED to have a few things:

  • Clear separation between good and bad: You need to set up what evil looks like and what good looks like. I want to be able to tell the good guys from the bad guys.

  • A moral tale to tell: I want to learn something from a legend. That’s why they exist; to teach me something.

  • Good needs to prevail: So many of the stories today are trying to be so realistic that the ending is a strange ambiguous question mark. I want the good guys to win.

Other than that, writing a legend is pretty free. That’s why it’s so hard to write them. To all you searchers out there, I hope this helps.

  1. I agree with u on the most part…but, sometimes, bad need to prevail so it will seem more interesting to write stories on them…my writing course wants us to write a legend in which someone can make a detective story out of…and all legends don’t hve to be gruesome…come on…99% are…that is the worst part about a legend…
