In 1985, I bought this watch at Smith’s Food King for $20. I was so excited! My friend had a Swatch and I wanted one SO bad, but they were $45. When I saw this one at the grocery store, I jumped at the chance to buy it.

When I took it to ZCMI to buy a new band for it, however, the clerk there told me the sad truth. It wasn’t a real Swatch.

You can tell it’s not real because it only has one thing on the band instead of two. Click the photo to see the notes on Flicker so you can tell a fake Swatch from a real one.

My mom felt so sorry for me, she said she would help me buy a REAL Swatch if I saved half the money.

  1. Hi Laura, I just finished reading all your Swatch stories and enjoyed them all! I have a couple of questions about your fake Swatch. Does the back of the watch case have any numbers? And does the battery go in the same way as a real Swatch watch? Hope you plan on buying more swatches and writing about them in the future. – Wayne D.

  2. Wayne,

I have MANY more Swatches, but I’ve bought them on eBay, so they don’t have many stories to go with them.

The fake Swatch doesn’t have any numbers on the back, but the battery case looks just like an original Swatch. Here is a link to a photo of the counterfeit next to an original.
