Justin.tv Is Strangely Calming

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 8:10 am

Justin.tv is sleeping…

Years ago, when I watched the movie, The Truman Show, I wondered why people would even care about watching some guy 24 hours a day. Heck, the eight hours a day when he was sleeping must be boring, right? Why would anyone watch Truman while he was sleeping?

For 13 days, 8 hours and 38 minutes, Justin Kan has been wearing a camera strapped to his head and a backpack to power it. For twenty-four hours a day, the cameras have been running. As I write this. Justing is sleeping. Why would I watch Justin sleep? Why would people watch Truman sleep? Because it’s strangely calming.

You can see what Justin is doing right now:

The few weblogs that have talked about Justin.tv have acted like what he is doing is amazing:

“Justin.tv is the mobile Internet lifecasting phenomenon that’s blowing up the new and old mediasphere.”

Blowing up? Nah… I don’t think so. Boring? Surprisingly not. I spent twenty minutes the other day watching Justin drive his car and listen to bad music. I loaded it up and the next thing I knew, I had lost twenty minutes of my life. Why did I keep watching? Partially to figure out where the heck he was, where he was going and why he was listening to such lame music on the car stereo. Later, I watched him wait for service at what looked like a mobile phone store. After five minutes, no one in the store had talked to him.

Why, why why? Why do I enjoy watching? It makes no sense to me. Am I waiting for him to crack? After 13 days of my life broadcast on the Internet, I would have cracked. How does he keep that hat on? What magical rocks are in that backpack that make this possible?

I had my doubts that The Truman Show could have happened. I didn’t believe that people would want to watch Truman’s mundane existence. I even thought that without the intervention from the production crew, no one would have watch Truman at all. Instead, I find myself watching Justin sleeping. Oh… he just turned over.

The most surprising fact is, Justin.tv is far more interesting and watchable than most of the television programming on the major networks.

Justin.tv has some sponsors, who I think deserve some props:

Not Quite Engineering Green

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 11:09 am

While walking today, I saw this can and it reminded me of the Mountain Dew fans. It’s not quite Engineering Green, but I’m sure it would do in a pinch. Sometimes I love litter. It can be so beautiful and can relieve the boredom of a morning walk. It’s afternoon, you say? Yeah, that too.

Smelly Flowers

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 12:08 pm

On my walk today, the air smelled like dirty water from a washing machine. At first, I thought the smell was coming from the panhandler that passed me, but I kept smelling it. I finally tracked it down to these flowers in the trees in my area. They are pretty, but they smell a little like urine.

Friendships Can Hurt

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 6:29 am

Exactly three years ago, I wrote this entry:

The entry has grown a life of its own. There are pages and pages of comments from both guys and girls who are dealing with this problem. It’s the same story written over and over again and it just breaks my heart every time.

For all the pleasure and fun that friendships afford, sometimes they can hurt as well.

My Phone Sings Twitter

Click here to see the video

I was testing my new camera to see how well it will work for videoblogging, but I had forgotten to turn off the Twitter notifications to my phone.

By the way, the camera I have been waiting for since last year at this time has finally arrived! Yeah! The film is so beautiful! I can’t wait to go to California and film some Walking DVDs for Starling Fitness! Ocean beaches and botanical gardens!

For months I have been telling myself that it’s not the camera, it’s the photographer. I have been reminding myself that I have a better camera in my purse than either Cecil B. Demille or Ansel Adams had their whole lives. Now, I have an even better camera. There’s no excuse now.

Cyberbullying: Is “Don’t Feed The Trolls” the Best Philosophy?

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 10:33 am

I just got another rude and disrespectful comment on one of our weblogs:

Before the Kathy Sierra incident, I would have just deleted the comment. No discussion. Nothing. I would have just deleted it and let it rot unread in my “Fan Mail” folder. It’s part of the “Don’t Feed the Trolls” philosophy that we have run under since about 1990 when we ran a BBS from a second line in our small apartment. They are our websites. I delete any comment that I don’t particularly like. I have been pretty ruthless about it, actually.

The thing is, I don’t really know if that method of dealing with trolls is the best. I really don’t. Sure, it gets rid of the trolls. They just go troll somewhere else, but it gives the rest of the world the impression that we don’t have trolls. Only I see them. So, when a new blogger starts dealing with the same problems as we have since 1990, she feels alone in the world. She thinks that Laura Moncur is beloved and no one would dare call her names, disagree with her in a disrespectful manner or threaten to kill her because she included a quotation that compared Jesus to Santa Claus in The Quotations Page.

The thing is, I PREFER deleting trolls. I get a certain feeling of revenge at taking away their voice. I don’t want to argue with them because they are obviously too stupid to understand or too blind to see another’s point of view. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t have posted in the manner that they did.

Deleting trolls makes other people forget they exist, though. It doesn’t actually remove them from the system. It just makes them invisible to everyone but me.

Is YOYOW (You Own Your Own Words) better? Is it better to just let the words hang there? Is it better to let others attack them for the hateful language? Is it better to just leave the comments as they come in?

I don’t know. All I know is I don’t want to see hateful and disrespectful comments on anything I own. That’s why I’m tempted to just delete them. It’s like graffiti. Do you leave it on your fence? Some people consider it art. It sure is a lot easier to leave the graffiti on the fence than to paint over it day after day after day when it keeps showing up every morning.

Another issue, however, is my constant deleting of trolls somehow creating an implied contract? If something I would normally consider disrespectful stays on one of my websites, does that imply that I agree with it? I have deleted so many comments in the past, but what if I don’t delete one? Does that mean I’m liable for what someone else posts on my websites? God, I hope not. How many times have disrespectful comments slipped through my fingers because of an email glitch or a weblog glitch or some other mysterious glitch in the system? I KNOW of one that slipped past me, but are there others?

So, I left a rude comment on The Gadgets Page. It sits there accusing me of being a pussy, a dolt, and a faggot. It implies that my entry about video games is reason enough for Islamic extremists to decide to attack me in my backyard. It’s not a death threat. It’s not the worst I’ve received, but it’s still there. Even now, I want to go back and just delete it.

I’m in cognitive dissonance about the whole thing and I don’t know what to do.

I’ll probably delete the comment, my response and even this entry. Silence has been our response for so long that I’m uncomfortable at the sound of my voice…

Update 2:09 pm: Well, that didn’t work… The whole thing devolved into a shouting match. I deleted all the comments (even my response) and closed comments on that entry.

Don’t Feed the Trolls wins, I guess…

Tales Of Mere Existence

Filed under: Movies — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Lev Yilmaz has created a lovely series of videos and put them on YouTube. This one, “…Take My Shoes Off?”, is the kind of conversation that I would have with Mike. After watching just a few of these videos, I became an instant fan. The cool thing is, you don’t have to schlep through YouTube to watch his videos. You can just buy his books and get a DVD of the videos with it.

I find such joy when I find a new artist that I enjoy. His videos remind me of childhood when I used to watch a show on PBS where they would read us a story and an artist would draw a scene from the story. Something about these stories seem so real and I just want to watch more.

Has Twitter Killed My Urge To Blog?

Filed under: Musings on Being a Writer — Laura Moncur @ 9:45 am

Writing feels like voodoo to me. Sometimes it feels like the words come out of my fingers instead of out of my head. Are there only a fixed number of words stored in my fingers? Am I wasting my words on Twitter?

It’s making me wonder.

Twitter only allows my to get my thoughts across in 140 characters. When I am texting on my phone, the 140 limit is a breeze. When I am typing on the keyboard, however, I hit the limit time and time again. Are there more words in my fingers than my thumbs?

When I can write I’m grateful and write as much as I can. When I can’t, I start blaming everything around me, oblivious to the fact that creativity comes in waves. I just need to ride the waves the best I can. Soon the words will flow out of my fingers again and I’ll have to mop up the mess on my keyboard.

To be honest, the whole troll thing is just bugging the crap out of me and I don’t want to tear off my skin and expose it to the underbelly of humanity in addition to the greatness.

To be totally honest, I’ve found Sims 2 for my DS to be a much more comforting way to deal with humanity. The Sims don’t even speak English, so I look like a genius to them.

Here’s One For The Wooster Collective

Filed under: Art and Photography — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

I noticed this sign outside the Circuit City by my house. Someone had added a spray paint sticker to the handicapped parking sign. It made me strangely happy to see it. It reminded me of the Wooster Collective, so I snapped a photo and planned to send it in to them.

I made a blog entry about it, instead…

I know graffiti is bad and it’s a sign that people don’t care about their property when it isn’t covered up quickly. I understand the broken windows concept, but I kind of like it. I don’t want it on my fence, but if it’s on your fence, I’ll take a picture of it. Then I’ll hope you paint over it as quickly as possible.

Talk about cognitive dissonance…

The iPod Cozy Is A Collosal Failure

Filed under: Art and Photography — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

The iPod Cozy is a collosal failure…Sometimes I create something from scratch and it works out great. Sometimes it’s even better than I expected. Other times, I create something that is barely passable as a cat toy and that’s only if I stuff the thing with catnip to entice them.

Enter Exhibit A: The iPod Cozy. When I was creating this, I imagined a great little cover for my iPod that would be fuzzy and fun. Instead, it’s ill-fitting and awkward. Where did I go wrong? I’m not quite sure and I don’t care enough to figure it out. In the end, I really do prefer my iPod unCozied because it slides into my pocket easily.

It seemed like such a good idea at the time…

Here is my latest creation that actually DID work out well (after two or three experiments):

Today Is My Birthday

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Aries (Hoover Dam 05-27-05)

Today is my birthday. I am 38 years old this year. I don’t feel old, even though 40 is a mere two years away. Somehow, I don’t believe it all. Age is just a number. The most important thing for me is how I feel.

Physically, I feel far younger than 38 years old. Five years ago, I felt older than I do now. Since I have been able to get relief from IBS, I feel so much better. It’s amazing how old constant pain can make you feel, but it’s just as amazing when you are finally free from it.

Intellectually, I feel 38 years old. I don’t feel like I know everything, but I am fully aware of how less stupid I am than I was when I was 21 years old. I never feel smart enough and I always can point a finger at someone who is smarter than I am. I wonder if I will ever feel like I have achieved nirvana intellectually and at the same time, I fear that feeling would be the start of my intellectual downfall.

Professionally, I feel 38 years old. I’m not at the peak of my career, but I’m happy how it is turning out. I finished college and learned that it taught me nothing about the “real world.” I suffered through the “real world” and finally realized that it has nothing to do with my life. I guess there’s not a college on the planet that could have taught me about my life.

Emotionally, I feel 38 years old. I still think about children and whether we should have them and if we do, where would we put ’em. My life is kind of full right now. Can I fit a baby in between the dresser and the bed? Can I fit a baby in between my writing and personal time? Mostly, I’m supremely happy being married to Mike and adding someone into our family of joy sounds like a good idea. Whether it will happen or not is another story, but it does sound like a good idea.

So, I’m 38 years old today. I’m feeling pretty good about it and I’m ready to celebrate. In fact, I think I’ll go to Disneyland to celebrate.

Dancing Tomatoes

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Not since the Clamato commercial have I enjoyed dancing food this much. Please allow the earworm to enter:

Apparently, this is so popular in Italy that people dress up and pretend to be tomatoes and cheese for funny YouTube videos.

All of this made me feel strangely happy! Thanks Missbhavens!

Saturday the 14th

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 8:09 am

Friday the 13th came and went without my notice. I didn’t even notice that yesterday was Friday the 13th. It felt like just a normal day. I guess it really just is superstition after all…

Quiet Morning in the Hotel

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 6:52 am

Early Morning at the Radisson Maingate by Laura Moncur 04-15-07

I am sitting in the Radisson Maingate hotel within walking distance of Disneyland. It is quiet here. The park doesn’t open up for another two hours or so, but I don’t hear any rumblings of activity in the hotel. I guess all the children are exhausted from yesterday’s trip to the park and are sleeping soundly.

My hotel is supposed to have wireless Internet, but it isn’t working, so I’m getting online with my trusty Treo. It isn’t very fast and I remember what it was like to access the Internet with a modem, but it always works in a pinch. That phone has bailed me out so many times that the iPhone is looking less impressive all the time. Maybe that money that I have been saving for Steve Jobs’ new toy will be spent on the new Treo and a bigger iPod instead. Maybe convergence is overrated.

The bed is quite uncomfortable in this hotel. The circulation to my arms was cut off several times over the night, waking me up. Waking up to the sensation of pins and needles is just unpleasant. I’m wondering if the other bed in our room is better, even though it’s positioned too close to the comfy chair. I guess I’ll try it tomorrow night.

I want to play Animal Crossing and find out who won the Flower Fest. I want that trophy…

My Latest Rampage

Filed under: Health and Fitness — Laura Moncur @ 7:00 am

I got the email yesterday and I was so angry that I just left it alone. I didn’t write anything. I just ignored the email and left it in my Inbox. Today, I reread it and I’m STILL angry.

I know I’m not supposed to blog when I’m angry, but I did anyway. How can Nike be so smug and stupid at the same time?!

Princess Luncheon

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 11:33 am

I was expecting crazy princess girls. I was expecting spoiled brats in expensive pink dresses and screaming. Instead, all the little girls here seem to act like they are incredibly grateful to be here. Shocking!

Self Portrait: Haunted Mansion

My first attempt at this self portrait was straight up my nose. This one is a little better. I’m waiting in line at the Haunted Mansion, my favorite ride!
