Supersonic Car Wash Sucks

Filed under: Living in SLC, UT — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Supersonic Car Wash calls this windshield clean

You are looking at my windshield AFTER Supersonic Car Wash “cleaned” it. I paid the extra money for this?!

Supersonic Car Wash didn’t even wipe out the cup holders

They didn’t even bother wiping out the cupholders. It’s not like my car was filled with clutter so they couldn’t get to my cupholders. They just did a sloppy job.

Worse still, I now have to run my own car through their car washing machine. I can do that myself at the local gas station for three bucks. Why I am paying the extra eighteen dollars? For their “friendly service”? I think not.

If I have to wipe down my interior and windshields myself (and I didn’t even bother taking a picture of their horrible job vaccumming), then I might as well clean my own car and save the $21.50. For the amount of time I wasted in their pathetic waiting room, I could have cleaned two cars myself better than their team of apathetic employees.

Don’t waste your money or time on a car wash from Supersonic. They aren’t worth it.

For the record, I paid for The Works Car Wash, which is their Full Service Wash with extra gunk and I also bought the extra Rain-X package. You can see their list of services here. Plus, I tipped them two bucks before I got a look at my car. I bought the best they could give me and this is what I got.

  1. Try Clarks Executive Detail. Its right in your neighborhood. It’s at the end of the street that Granite furniture is on. I let them do The $300 thing once a year or so, but their wash service is primo too. About $30 and worth every cent. And yeah, SuperSonic sucks. I’ve thought about opening a California style car wash in SLC, it’s one of the few things I miss about CA. Steve

  2. Thanks, Steve!

I really felt like I had no place else to go except to drive down to Las Vegas and take my car to Terrible Herbst.

I’ll try Clarks Executive Detail next time!

  3. I agree Laura! They have a good system of getting people to pay money and a nice waiting room. But it takes forever and they just gloss over your car, no matter what package you buy. Rip off. Janet

  4. In SuperSonic’s defense, i think they do a great job. I take my car there all the time as does my husband, we have for years. Everytime i leave one of their employee’s ask me “does it look ok for you?” there’s your chance if you have a problem… Is it not? I highly doubt that your windshield looked like that after you left. If it did it tells me you dont wash your car very often and it is completly filthy when you take it in. These people arent miracle workers. You probably wash your car once every four months, but expect it to be the cleanest it has ever been.. As the old saying goes, you cant turn sh@t to sugar. Not going to happen. From my experience there I have learned that they always have management on the property at all times. Maybe next time you will ask for one of them if you have a problem. I would. Remember mistakes can happen. Last time i checked only 1 person has ever walked on water. Well after reading your comments maybe 2.

  5. I had exactly as much gunk in my cup holders before the car wash as afterward. It’s not like it was so dirty that they were only able to get half of it. They didn’t even wipe them out at all. I cleaned them with one paper towel and a squirt of Windex, but I was paying THEM to do that in the first place.

I don’t want to have to critique their work afterward. If they didn’t do a good enough job, I’m not going back. It’s not my job to monitor their employees for them.

  6. I agree. BTW what location did you visit? i go to the one in ogden. not the same ownership at all locations.

    Comment by Kelly — 5/4/2007 @ 8:47 pm

  7. I went to the Supersonic on 700 East and 3300 South. Maybe it’s worth a trip to Ogden for a better wash. That’s closer than Las Vegas.

  8. I didnt want to sound like a jerk but in ogden i always see those boys working very, very hard. And they have always been nothing but very helpful and polite to me. I guess that the manager of Ogden needs to give those boys in SLC some training. Your right, it’s not your job to police their employee’s. Sounds like a managment problem to me. You should call the ogden location, I bet the manager there would make it right with you.

  9. I work for supersonic and i get the complaint about the cup holders a lot. Sometimes I’ll do them, but if its busy, I won’t. If you will look over the menu you posted, you’ll see that no where it says “We will clean that old coke out of the cup holder.” We will gladly DUST off the dash and console. if you want to get the gunk and stuff out of there, I would suggest dropping $40 to get an interior detail.

  10. I had the exterior of my 2003 Jeep washed, I usually do it myself, but I was in a hurry. My front plastic fender flares, which came stock on the vehicle got scrathced up, i returned within 15 minutes, of course they said it couldn’t have happened as a result of anything to do with thier equiptment. I called and was told the manager was busy and to call back in a half hour. I did, he was gone, and nobody had any idea when he might return. Has anyone else had damage done to thier stock vehicle by thier equiptment? They have a disclaimer stating that non-stock accesories could be damaged. So what about stock equiptment vehicles? It will now cost me $250.00 to repair what they did! What ever happened to taking care of your customer and making things right! This was my first and definatley LAST time doing business with them.

  11. In all fairness, I will give them a few days to see how or if they try to rectify the situation. for the record, my Jeep is ALWAYS kept in IMMACULATE condition. Scratch and damage free. The wash actually looked good. But, the damage factor is not acceptable. So far however, not much luck. Any advise?

  12. Super Sonic car wash I believe is the Best up to date that is. I’ve been going to sugar house meany times and the employee treats me like his own son; he helps me under stand how to wash my car and what I need to do in order to get my dirt off. IDK any other car wash that can help you and mabie give you free 15minutes if your that dumb. But I recomand Never to go to gas station “yes” its cheap but your car comes out with spots! they dont have a person everyday to check up on the machine to see how well its working. Super SOnic been around for meany years. I’ve talked to the owner him self about it. They spend thousands of dollers to make the car wash better, even if your car is “Not CLean” good they will refune your money on the spot “if” you talk to the rgiht person. Some people say that there brushes on the self service damage there car NO!! some people are dumb and dont clean the brush before use OR they dip in the ground so they can get soup and not have to pay extra money! DUMB!!!!! they scartch there own car bye picking it up from the ground where there is Rocks! Not smart and they blame it on the car wash! Now for the full surves they have tywal wash but not doring the winter why? Its COLD! and no one want to do that only during the summer. for real! Super sonic got more things than anyOther car wash in UTAH!! PLZZ E-Mail me any car wash that has better stuff and technolgy! excuse my spelling I’m short handed…… Come bye Sugar house and ask the employee how to clean your car better OR whats BEST for my car….. I Guarantee he’ll help you out IF his not Busy

    -= I give Super Sonic **** stars best wash=-

  13. It scratched your front fenders but not your paint or front bumper? I smell a scam artist!!! Mike it is almost impossible for car wash equipment to scratch just your vehicle. If it scrathes yours it does it to the next ones (cars) until the problem is found. was their a line of 20 other cars in the lot ALL saying theirs was scratched too. if not it was probably (the scratches) already there. Nothing in the car wash will scratch your car. Car washes get blamed for alot of damage that is pre-existing. And dont give me that crap that you walk around your car everytime before you get in it. I dont know ANYONE that does that. Honestly, does anyone REALLY know ANYONE that walks around their car EVERY time before they get in it????? Your car is covered in dirt, dust, mud, salt. That is why you take it there, as soon as the car is clean then that gives you the opportunity to find any damage (scratches) and assume the wash did it. I have worked for this company before for years and i never saw the car wash scratch a car. I have seen a few mirrors get broke but that’s about it. Not to mention that it was paid for (the damage)right away. Think about it. If they really scratched cars would they really be in business? They are the best for a reason. And i call your damage claim BS. Also was the car used? I have worked for car dealers that have products that cover scratches in the paint and plastic. They work great but only for a while then they wear off. Dealers know this but dont care because after you buy it, it’s a done deal. And Laura i hope you give them another try, like Kelly said if the jobs not done right ask for a manager. They will make it right with you. And Steve i worked for a car wash in calli and for Supersonic, and trust me there is not much difference. But while i worked in Calli all i heard from the hard to please customers was ” in Arizona they do it for $4 and they armorall everything and shampoo it and wax it blah, blah, blah”. Guess what i heard when i moved here and worked for Supersonic? “in Callifornia they wash everything for $5 and they shampoo it and wax it and armorall everything and park it and” well you know where im going. The funniest was when they said that, i asked them what wash they were talking about. They would say what one they were talking about and i knew they were lying to my face. I worked for some of them and the prices are darned near the SAME. If not higher. So what is a Calli style wash anyway? Your the expert here.

  14. Jesse,

It’s nice to hear from an insider. The reason I’m not giving Supersonic another try is because I don’t want to monitor them. It’s not my job to force their employees to do what they say they’re going to do. I’m not going to talk to a manager, I’m just never using them again.

If I have to work to get my car clean, I’ll clean it myself.

  15. I’d suggest going to the one in Orem. They do fast, great work and if they happen to miss something, just ask them and they’ll do double what you asked for. Go there! A LOT closer than Vegas.

  16. What I’m looking for is a car wash that doesn’t miss anything. I don’t want to have to monitor their employees.

  17. in denfense of supersonic not every one gets every thing every time but from the looks of it they should have caught that. the best way to get the wash you want is to go through a owner operated wash that has your best interest and his/her commpanys interest in mind. there are a hand full of mobile detailers out there that give this service any where your at mabey try one of those insted of a drive through or a self serve

  18. So which SuperSonic car wash location did the sloppy job? I’ve got a free Works Wash coupon, and from the comment #15 above, I think I’ll go to the one in Orem. I won the free car wash when I did not have a car; now I’ve got one whose previous owner was a complete pig, so the car wash crew has their work cut out for them.

    Comment by Lyle — 6/3/2008 @ 8:15 pm

  19. I must agree with you, the SLC supersonic does suck. but i would totally recommend any of the other supersonics in utah. especially the provo location, they rock. they also check your car for damage before it goes in. so if anything happens in the wash they will know it. and the top manager is a total HOTTIE!!!

  20. BULLS@*T on the window!!!!! unless you put paint on the window that is not what it looks like after you wash your car.

    Comment by Lorax — 6/5/2008 @ 10:06 pm

  21. Lorax,

That was really how the inside of the window looked after the car wash. It’s not paint, it’s that dust that collects on the inside of a car window after a winter of recirculated air.

Honestly, it had been months since I had cleaned that window, but that’s WHY I went to Sonic.

  22. We were considering taking our car to them but after reading this there is no way we will ever use them. Thanks for the heads up!

  23. You can also try a new company I found called “Premier Detailing”. They are completely mobile and they come to my work and wash my car in the parking lot. I don’t even have to take time out of my day and the work is phenomenal. Its just 2 guys who came up from southern California so if that is the type of work your looking for I recommend giving them a call. It beats driving to Vegas, or anywhere for that matter. Their numbers are 801-921-2610 for Tim and 801-471-3694 for Jon. They usually fit me into their schedule that week. Good luck with your troubles.

  24. I go to supersonic in ogden and nowhere does it say that they will wipe down your interior. it is a light dusting of the dash and steering column area.DUSTING, not wiping out your fast food crumbs etc etc. but what is great about them, is that if you want those EXTRA services done, they do them with a smile upon request. Laura you sound like maybe you should clean it yourself, because some people are never pleased. further, the Ogden location has been in business for over 50 years and is still going strong.

  25. Your window is from smoking in your car. It builds up a film and is hard to get off. FYI, Stop smoking in your car.

    Comment by Brody — 9/20/2010 @ 5:42 pm

  26. Brody,

Neither of us smoke (in the car or anywhere else). Dust builds up on the inner windows of cars whether you smoke or not and it’s Supersonic’s job to clean it off. They did a crappy job and I’ve never gone back.

  27. I just stumbled upon this site because I was in a hurry earlier today and the place I usually go to is farther away from my home. I usually go to Prompt Car Wash. It is on 4800 so and state st. in SLC. I was in a real big hurry had to pick a relative up from the air port and had to wash it quick their is a supersonic by my house, that sonic is the one in american fork, I figured to wash it quick their while I had a friend take me to run an erand close to home so that I could go straight to the airport via highway, big mistake. To be short sonic was terrible, and i had forgotten about the little scratches that brushes always put on your car, i remember now that is why I had stoped using them about 10 years ago, and a coworker of mine at the county told me about prompt, after so many years now that I go to Prompt, i rerealized why i go there. A. sonic did do a terrible job on the inside, I am not expecting a miracle I just at least want what the sign says a dust and vacuum, at prompt I always get my moneys worth and if there ever is even a slight thing needing touch up they are always friendly, and best of all they are no brushes, the only car wash in the valley to date that I have found to be so, at sonic or any carwash that has brushes they leave little ity bity scarches everwhere. I have rerealized now why i only go and will never go anywhere but prompt ever again.
