Turn Yourself Into Jack Skellington

Filed under: Halloween — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Jack Skellington Balaclava on Knitty.com

Halloween in Utah is VERY cold. Most kids are wearing coats under their costumes and sometimes it’s snowing. For any kid who wants to be something scary, this is a great pattern.

Best of all, it rolls up into a normal looking hat when you’re not cold.

The Halloween Party Was AWESOME!

Filed under: Halloween — Laura Moncur @ 9:54 am

Laura Moncur as Mrs. Incredible

I just finished counting the people who came to the party and we had over fifty people! That’s WAY too much for my 800 square foot house, but it all worked out. It was like we had two parties. After we voted on the costumes and gave away the prizes, a lot of people left just in time for the second wave of people who came.

Seems kind of silly that I worry about no one attending every year and every year I have more people than can fit in the house.

I haven’t labeled all the photos yet, so I have my work cut out for me. Of course, I need to clean up the party mess first.

Thanks to everyone who attended! It was awesome and I am so excited for next year!

Pre-Party Jitters

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 1:53 pm

I was up until 2 am last night making monster cupcakes for the Halloween party. It’s only 2 pm and I’m worried that no one will show up.

Every year I worry and every year we are so packed that there’s no room to move. I don’t know why I worry. Even if only Stacey and Dan show up, it would be a rockin’ party.

I wish I could turn off the worry gene.

The Haunted Mansion Gets Decorated

Filed under: Halloween — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

This time of the year, The Haunted Mansion undergoes a metamorphosis and gets even spookier (if that is possible). Wil Wheaton went to Disneyland and his wife snapped this photo of him in front of the newly decorated ride.

All I want to do is eat your brains from Flickr

I’ve never been to Disneyland at this time of the year. I feel like I’m missing out.

Jesus Is The Reason For The Season?

Filed under: Halloween — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Religious Pumpkin?Oriental Trading Company has an array of “religious pumpkin” Halloween toys.

I know Oriental Trading Company makes the bulk of their money from Sunday School teachers who want to give toys away to the children in their classes to convince them that Jesus is “fun,” but really, Halloween Jesus? Is this really where you want to go?

Come on. All Saints Day is a perfectly cromulent Christian holiday. Why do you have to go and ruin my Samhain?

Halloween Car Magnets

Halloween Car Magnets

If you want to decorate your car for Halloween, here are some car magnets that can dress up your vehicle. They stick to your car with magnets and leave your paint unmarred after you remove them in November.

Do I want these? I don’t think so. I don’t spend enough time in my car anymore to make these worth it. Plus, I’m pretty sure the magnets would end up in the hands of roaming children in the neighborhood.

Pumpkin Picture Holder

Pumpkin Picture HoldersWhen I first saw these pumpkin picture holders, I thought they were using real pumpkins. Instead, they are using pumpkins crafted out of fimo clay and give full instructions on how to create them. It’s easier than you might think.

I think this might be a fun thing to do with a real pumpkin, however. If you have had Halloween parties in the past, you can put photos of costumes from the previous year. You could also use them to give directions (i.e. This way to the bathroom). I really like this craft project!

Favorite Costumes From the Make and Craft Crew

Filed under: Halloween — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 pm

H. R. PuffNStuffThe crafters and makers at Make and Craft magazine talk about their favorite Halloween costumes.

I love Brian Jepsen’s trip down memory lane:

As a kid, I was drawn to vivid psychedelic imagery (hey, who wasn’t?). The trippier, the better. I was sucked right into HR Pufnstuf as well as Lidsville, my two favorite kids shows. I was thrilled to be able to dress up as HR Pufnstuf one halloween, and this photo remains one of my favorite pictures in my family’s pile of slides.

I have dressed up more for Halloween than most people do in a lifetime. It seems like I’m continually trying to make up for those years as a child when I couldn’t celebrate. I have ended up turning Halloween into some sort of yearly event that I think about all year long. I don’t have any photos from childhood of me dressed up in a one-dimensional costume, but maybe if I did, I wouldn’t like Halloween as much as I do today.

The Haunted History of Halloween

Here is another video talking about the history of Halloween once again from The History Channel:

I love the retro video that they use. I miss those old costumes where you just have a mask and a piece of vinyl to go over your normal clothes. And don’t miss the interview with the modern Pagans performing a Samhain ritual.

Bleu Arts: The Leia Wig, Fleece Edition

Filed under: Halloween — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Princess Leia Fleece WigThis particular Princess Leia wig is made out of fleece and was for sale a few weeks ago, but that doesn’t stop you from making your own.

Since I’ve cut my hair, I miss how many things I could do with it. I had enough hair to sport the Princess Leia do without the help of artificial hair (fleece or otherwise). Now, my hair is barely able to fit in a ponytail. This is the ONLY time of the year that I miss it.

Skull and cross bones from Flickr

Halloween and cemeteries seem to go hand in hand. Here is a slideshow of the Graves and Cemeteries Pool on Flickr.

All Hallow’s Eve used to be a celebration of our ancestors gone by. A strangely Pagan holiday, the witches, vampires and wolves have replaced the ghosts. This month, don’t forget to think of your loved ones who have passed. They are watching you and are urging you to dress up and fun while you still can.

Knit a Tiny Ghost

Knit a Bitty Boo

Whether they are for decorating your bottle tops or lollipops, these cute little Halloween ghosts are adorable.

They are knitted out of wool and then “felted” which is a watery matting of the wool that shrinks the ghost, so your original knitted work will be substantially larger than the finished product.

What’s That Bug?

Filed under: Halloween — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 pm

Bug of the month: October 2007Insects and arachnids don’t scare me, but I’ve heard that other people are scared by them. Maybe it’s because some spiders are poisonous. Maybe it’s because they could infest your hair or clothing. Maybe it’s because when they crawl on you, they make you feel itchy. If you are feeling itchy right now, check out this website for a Halloween thrill:

If creepy crawlers give you the hot and cold running chills, What’s That Bug is perfect for a quick scare. There is plenty there to freak you out.

Me? I just think it’s cool! I had no idea there was a website that would identify the weird bugs I see. Next time, I’m taking out my camera when I see an unidentifiable insect.

Mike talks about this all the time. Charlie Brown goes trick or treating with his friends and they get great candy and he gets a rock.

Because I never saw this as a child, it seems strangely unclimatic to me. I was never allowed to watch the holiday specials on TV when I was a kid because we were Jehovah Witness. Watching them as an adult just isn’t the same.

I guess I missed out on this piece of the collective unconscious.

Extreme PumpkinsIf you haven’t carved your pumpkin yet, there are a lot of good ideas on this website. Be forewarned, some of them are a little gross and gory:

After seeing all the creative ideas that they have there, I am almost tempted to try one on my own. Ever since we bought the pumpkin lamp, I haven’t really wanted to try a pumpkin, but these are making me excited. Last time I carved a pumpkin, we used a knife. Now they have those cool pumpkin carving tools that limit my risk of cutting myself. Maybe I should.

I wonder what they put in the pumpkin to burn so high and bright…
