Me and Stacey 1980

Filed under: Personal History — Laura Moncur @ 12:22 pm

I love this photo of Stacey and I.

Laura and Stacey 1980

That day, Stacey and I had put on a parade on our street. We dressed up Stacey in her swimming suit, put the Fun Fountain hat on her head, a veil over the clown hat, and clown makeup on her face. Then I pushed her up and down the street in the wheel barrow. I took a photo of her in the wheelbarrow, but I don’t have a copy of that picture. It must be in Stacey’s book.

That was such a fun day in my memory. It was one of those days when the weather was nice, there was no school or parents at home and we could basically do whatever we wanted.

Plus, Stacey looks super cute in this photo…

PostSecret: You Need Not Find A Cure

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 3:22 pm

This postcard from PostSecret really made me feel a little better.

PostSecret: You Need Not Find A Cure

It reads:

You need not find a cure for everything that makes you weak…

For years, I tried to find a cure for my low self-esteem until I realized that I didn’t need to feel good about myself in order to be a success. Sure, I’m weaker because I don’t have a good self-esteem, but I’m able to survive without it. And that’s what’s important.

Update 02-08-10: According to Shannon in the comments, this line is from the song, Against the Grain by City and Colour.

PostSecret‘s beneficiary is the National Hopeline Network. It is a 24-hour hotline (1 (800) SUICIDE) for anyone who is thinking about suicide or knows someone who is considering it.

Bronze Heart

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

In honor of Valentine’s Day, here is a lovely bronze heart:

Bronze Heart

My brother made this sculpture for my on a summercourse. It is Bronze and weighs a lot ! He made this especially for me and I am quite blown away…. speachless…

There were so many Valentine’s Days when I felt unloved. Of course, I ignored the devotion of my sister and parents. If you are feeling neglected this holiday, remember your family. They love you and want you to be happy.

There are more kinds of love than just romantic love.

KSL Interview for the Utah Geek Dinners

Filed under: Utah Geeks — Laura Moncur @ 11:46 am

Utah Blogger/Geek Dinner: July 2008 by LauraMoncur from FlickrI was contacted yesterday by Paul Nelson from KSL Radio. He wanted to know more about the Utah Geek Community, so I had him over to my house and gave him Thom Allen and Matt Reinbold’s name as well. You can read the interview here:

You can hear the interview here:

I’ve had trouble with Old Media before, so I was a little reluctant to do the interview. Mike even asked me why I was willing to do an interview after the trouble with the Salt Lake Tribune. I told him that it’s good karma. If I do this interview, there might be someone out there on their way to work listening to KSL who might feel lonely just like I did back in 2006. We might find that person.

By the way, our next Geek Dinner is TOMORROW. You can RSVP here:

All Of Our Clocks

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 3:14 pm

I cringe every time Daylight Savings rolls around. We have approximately twenty clocks in the house that need changing. Here are some of my favorites.

This Starburst clock was a garage sale find. I painted the faux wood grain plastic and replaced the clock innards so it would run correctly. When I walk past it, sometimes the metal tines catch on my clothing and vibrate an unearthly tone.

Starburst Clock by LauraMoncur from Flickr

This Starburst clock was a recent purchase from a second hand store. I spent WAY too much money on it considering that it doesn’t keep time. Rather than admit defeat, I just put it on the wall without a battery. It isn’t a clock so much as a wall decoration.

Starburst Clock by LauraMoncur from Flickr

Mike’s dad gave us this Dr. Pepper clock. The numbers 10, 2, and 4 are highlighted because those are the times during the day when you’re supposed to drink a Dr. Pepper.

Mike’s dad also gave us this Frostie Rootbeer clock. I had never heard of Frostie Rootbeer before we had received this clock. Every once and a while Mike and I will find bottles of it at specialty food stores like Liberty Heights.

Frostie Rootbeer Clock by LauraMoncur from Flickr

Sometimes my small home feels like the Doc’s house in Back To The Future. I have so many clocks and I actually USE them all, so the time does need to be changed on all of them. These vintage clocks, however, are special to me.
