The Saints Confer by Laura Moncur 05-08-07

When I worked as a secretary a few years ago, I wrote entries about St. Jude and Buddha. They sat at my desk, watching over me and I imagined what they would say about me:

The two of them sat with me at that desk until I unceremoniously forgot them when I was laid off. I told myself I didn’t care that I forgot them and I knew I wasn’t about to go back there to get them, so I wrote them off for good.

I was lying to myself because I felt a surge of joy when I found them left on my doorstep in a FedEx envelope. My former coworker brought them back to me and I was so grateful to her. I never thanked her. I guess I’m kind of a heel for that…

They were joined by St. Lucia:

She has been watching over me and guiding my words for a few years as well.

The trio sit on the windowsill in front of my desk. The other day, it looked as if they were conferring. I wonder what they say about me now…

St. Jude: She just keeps linking to other websites and including other people’s videos. Is that really writing?

St. Lucia: Not enough for me.

Buddha: Quit talking, you two! You make her look insane.

Sun’s In My Eyes by Laura Moncur 05-08-07

It doesn’t happen every morning. Some mornings, the sun is hiding behind the clouds. Some mornings, I’m hiding underneath the covers. Some mornings, I’m in another town. When it does happen, though, it’s mighty pretty.

When I was resizing this photo, I noticed St. Jude and Buddha to the right of my computer screen. It inspired me to take a bunch more photos and give you an update about them.

Road To Nowhere By The Talking Heads

Little Creatures at Amazon.comYou know when you listen to an album every day for months and then don’t listen to it again for twenty years. When you pick it up, it usually just feels kind of nostalgic, but mostly you think, “Man, this album kinda sucks…”

Yeah, that’s totally how I DIDN’T feel with Little Creatures by The Talking Heads.

I had originally bought this album on tape. I have no idea where that tape is now, so I spent some Christmas Amazon.com money on this album to replace it. It was one of those “I should really have this album in my collection – I liked it so much when I was a teen” moments. When it arrived, I put it on my iPod, but I didn’t bother to actually load up the album and listen to it all the way through.

Sure, I’m sick of songs like “Stay Up Late” and “And She Was,” but I had forgotten how much I liked “Give Me Back My Name” and “Road To Nowhere.”

Here is the video to Road To Nowhere:

So far ahead of their time that only now do I recognize the Mexican wrestler masks on the business suits. I understand now. Business is just entertainment, just like Mexican wrestling. It’s not any more real or honorable. How could I have not seen that when I was fifteen years old? Probably because I didn’t know it… well, that, and I had never seen a Mexican wrestler until about a year and a half ago…

B-Movie-Style Posters For A-Movies

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Back To The Future: INCEST! Click to see full size.In honor of Grindhouse and it’s B-Movie style posters, the folks in the Something Awful forums created this collection of B-Movie-style posters for A-Movies.

I think this Back To The Future entry by Reverend Cheddar is my favorite. Science! Incest! Rape Gangs! Jazz! When you look at it that way, it makes Back To The Future seem like a depraved piece of tripe instead of the… well, it’s not depraved, at least…

I wish all movies had alternate posters that looked like this for me. There are a lot of movies that I would probably see just to see if the posters were accurate or not. There were so many movies on this list that I hadn’t seen that I now kind of want to see, just because of the posters in this collection.

Site Redesign

Filed under: Blog Stuff — Laura Moncur @ 9:56 am

Just in case you’re reading this weblog on RSS, Mike completed a redesign of Pick Me! over the weekend. It looks lovely, yes?

The previous design was a three column layout that didn’t give me much room to post pictures. Plus, I was getting a little sick of the tiny lettering and other minor formatting problems that Pick Me! didn’t have compared to our other weblogs. Mike and I sat down and I pointed and grunted while he designed this great layout!

Check out my new Archives. Instead of listing EVERY SINGLE MONTH I’ve ever written posts, it lists the years that I have been writing. You can access a more detailed archives by clicking on any month. Mike did that! Excellent work!

I’m smiling now! Happy, happy! Joy, joy!

A Good Start To Your Day

Cute OverloadIf I start my day out right, I end up happy all day long. From now on, the first thing I look at every morning is going to be Cute Overload:

I can get my morning dose of images that make me happy and soft before deleting the hard core porn spam from the forums and comments.

If you need some cuteness right now:

This kitty massage has been showing up on YouTube with music and voice overs, but here is the original footage.

The only disconcerting thing is that I keep pronouncing it, “Cute Overlord.” Can’t shake the image of a kitten dressed up as Darth Vader.

Rubik’s Cube Solution

Filed under: Personal History — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

200705_25_03 - Cube by MyUtopian on FlickrI was looking at this website and I felt a soft and warm feeling flow over me. Ahh, Rubik’s Cube…

In 8th grade, I enjoyed a modicum of junior high fame because I could solve a Rubik’s Cube. My best time was somewhere around three minutes and I was so proud of it. People who wouldn’t deign to talk to me before, would furtively ask me to solve their cube. They would offer me money. They would be nice.

It was the first time in my life that someone was nice to me because I was smart.

I think the Rubik’s Cube was the first in a line of events that showed me that life as a Geek wasn’t so bad. Life as a Geek could alter the typical power structure. I always refused to do someone else’s homework, but I was perfectly willing to solve their Rubik’s Cube.

Everyone has been posting this:

09-f9-11-02-9d-74-e3-5b-d8-41-56-c5-63-56-88-c0

DVD DRM CensorshipIt looks like a secret code. I thought it might have something to do with Lost or Heroes or some other popular television show that I haven’t invested the time in yet.

Nope.

It is the HD DVD DRM decryption code and the powers that be are trying to keep it hidden. So much so they are putting pressure on sites that are posting this code.

Sorry, folks. DVD DRM is wrong because it doesn’t allow me to play the movie I just bought on my iPod, cell phone or any other device that isn’t a DVD player. It only takes ONE person to crack your codes and the solution will spread.

You cannot silence us.

Yesterday was Tuesday, so I took a self-portrait while I was in West Yellowstone. I saw these lime green cowboy hats in San Antonio, Texas last September. I wanted one, but I didn’t buy one. This time, I didn’t let the opportunity slide. My intention yesterday was that I was going to be the girl in the green cowboy hat all the time. Today, I’m thinking I might wear it again, someday…

Maybe next time I go to Texas…

Tasteful Birthday Cards To Download

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Vine Card from How about orange…

So many birthday cards that are available with Microsoft Publisher or even Apple Pages are garish and tacky. These are a little more tasteful:

I always print up my own birthday cards. It’s nice to see that other people do as well. I haven’t found a good greeting card from any of the companies for years and printing my own is the only option for me now.

I don’t want something sappy. I don’t want something that makes fun of how old you are. I especially don’t want something that uses Kai’s Power Goo on pictures of animals. I just want a nice tasteful card that says I’m glad you were born and I’m glad you’re still alive. Is that so much to ask?

A View of Abortion

Filed under: Philosophy — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

This is the first time I’ve ever read a man’s opinion about abortion and agreed with it 100 percent.

DBB from Michigan describes his experience with his wife’s last pregnancy:

Nothing is stopping the bleeding. There seems to be nothing they can do. They talk about trying some drugs, but then they decide things are going too fast to give time to let them work. So that leaves only surgery as a possibility. Surgery means hosing her out. It means killing the baby. So obviously, we look into other options. Only now, my wife is so out of it, from blood loss, from the painkillers, that the doctor said she is no longer able to legally consent. Now I’m handed a clipboard. On it is consent to basically give my wife an abortion and kill our future child. And it is all on me, my decision, mine alone. Something I never thought I’d ever face, ever have to deal with. Made worse by being a decision of either kill the baby or potentially watch both my wife and the baby die.

I think about all those meddling politicians that would want to interject themselves into everything that just happened to me, interject themselves between me, my wife, and her doctors. And then I had a strong, visceral reaction. I wanted the mutherfuckers to die.

I get that strong reaction every time someone defends the Pro-Life stance. It’s MY body. Keep your hands out of my uterus, please.

How I Survived High School

Filed under: Personal History — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

I read this article about people partying with Shabu, which is a pure form of methamphetamine. It brought up all my memories of partying during high school.

Want to know how I survived high school? I was the observer. I attended those parties and didn’t drink or smoke. I pretended to drink and I’m ever so thankful to Calvin for teaching me how, but I was stone cold sober at all of those parties. Reading this article from the point of view of the observer reminded me of how stupid all my friends seemed when they were drunk.

If you ever want to stop drinking or doing drugs, have someone tape you while you’re partying. Have them film EVERYTHING and then have the balls to watch it all: start to finish. Your own stupidity will scare you straight.

Supersonic Car Wash Sucks

Filed under: Living in SLC, UT — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Supersonic Car Wash calls this windshield clean

You are looking at my windshield AFTER Supersonic Car Wash “cleaned” it. I paid the extra money for this?!

Supersonic Car Wash didn’t even wipe out the cup holders

They didn’t even bother wiping out the cupholders. It’s not like my car was filled with clutter so they couldn’t get to my cupholders. They just did a sloppy job.

Worse still, I now have to run my own car through their car washing machine. I can do that myself at the local gas station for three bucks. Why I am paying the extra eighteen dollars? For their “friendly service”? I think not.

If I have to wipe down my interior and windshields myself (and I didn’t even bother taking a picture of their horrible job vaccumming), then I might as well clean my own car and save the $21.50. For the amount of time I wasted in their pathetic waiting room, I could have cleaned two cars myself better than their team of apathetic employees.

Don’t waste your money or time on a car wash from Supersonic. They aren’t worth it.

The One Gene Simmons Calls

Filed under: General — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Digital Thom had an interesting entry last month:

Thom said,

The first thing Gene does is call a business partner and tells him “I want to meet the most influential people in X city; the Mayor, business leaders, the real estate guru. Make it happen.”

It occurred to me after he said this, would I be the one Gene’s business partner called? If not, why?

I think I’d prefer to stay under Gene Simmons’ radar. I don’t need to be the most influential in my field. I just need to make a decent living and enjoy my life to the fullest.

I had no idea I felt like that until I read his entry…

What I Would Say If I Were Anonymous

Filed under: Musings on Being a Writer — Laura Moncur @ 8:57 am

I haven’t been writing for fun lately: not here, not on my other blogs, not even in my journal. I’ve been writing because I’m a writer and there is writing to do, but I haven’t been doing it just for fun for awhile. Twitter is the closest thing to writing for fun that I’ve done for a long time.

Sometimes, I feel like forcing it makes it worse. Sometimes, I feel like just getting my fingers on the keyboard and forcing it is the answer. Sometimes, I feel ashamed that I have been such a “slacker.” Sometimes I feel like it doesn’t matter because no one reads my sites anyway (which I know is a lie, but I tell myself that anyway).

Sometimes I wish it was like before. You know, before I realized that the whole world could read my weblog. I felt like I could say almost anything. Back in my mind, I knew that everyone could read my words, but I felt anonymous. Even though my full real name was plastered on it, I felt anonymous. There was really no excuse for that feeling, but I liked it when I had it.

What would I say right now if no one was reading?

  • I’m sick of traveling, even though we are traveling for “pleasure.” I want to live somewhere I don’t have to escape from.

  • I wish we could move to San Diego and every month that we stay here, I feel like I’m not living my most full life.

  • I want the Geek community to grow in Salt Lake City, but KNOW that we will never be as interesting or as invigorating as the Geek community in San Francisco. I also know that the Geek community in San Diego could also never compete with San Francisco, but I don’t care.

  • I HATE Utah because of the strong religious influence. It feels like a brick pressing on my chest all the time. It feels like a sword dangling from a thread over my head.

Logically, none of this makes sense. It doesn’t matter where I live, all that matters is what I do. I could live in a shack in the middle of nowhere and as long as I had Internet connectivity, I could work. I don’t need to live in California to work. I don’t need to live in California to thrive. All of this has nothing to do with Utah and EVERYTHING to do with my state of mind.

I just need to fix my head, but I don’t know how…

HeMan IS the Master of the Universe

Filed under: Personal History — Laura Moncur @ 4:29 pm

This video shows some people from a television show called The Eagle’s Nest. Based on facial hair and tie width, it looks like it’s from the early ’80’s and they are discussing HeMan and his occultic influence on our youth…

It’s now 2007. My sister and I are the children that they were so worried about. I can safely tell you that I fell away from Jesus because of dorks like the guys in this video and not because of HeMan. In fact, HeMan was awesome. At the end of every episode, they had a moral to the story. I learned more good morals from HeMan than I ever did from the misogynistic writings of the Bible.

  • @ Phil801 Just lace up and run 1 mile. Getting out the door is the hardest part. #
  • Deleting porn spam from the Quotations Forum. Why, why, why must I be bombarded with those images every day?! #
  • @ ThomAllen Good job, citizen! We’ve lost too many good people to drunk drivers. #
  • Wrote 2 blog entries, read some RSS and now I’m going to go for a run. #

  • Ash, that explains a lot. #
  • Played Sims 2 for 2 hours. I’m finished with the story arc, but I still love to play. #
  • Gonna crash early. Nighty, night, twitches… #
  • I’m up, but unwilling to shower. I have 6 hours of driving ahead of me and I’m not looking forward to it. Invent “Instant Home” for me, K? #
  • I don’t want to go back to SLC. I like the weather in SD better. I already want to go back. #
  • Just passed St. George. Rain is slowing traffic down. At this rate, won’t be back to SLC until 7 or 8 pm. #
  • I’m in on the Thursday Geek Meetup at Applebees. #
  • @ Ash, how do I look up I-15 traffic info? We’re stuck in a jam. #
  • @ libel vox We’ll have to shoot for May. We’re out of town again on Friday. #
  • @ash Thanks. It doesn’t work on my Treo, but we found out what it was… Construction. #

I didn’t cheat for the Flower Fest and even though my flowers were vast and beautiful, I didn’t win. Next time, I’m going to cheat…

  • Wake up, twitches! It’s Saturday mornin’ cartoon time! Heading to Jean, Nevada today. They closed Nevada Landing, so we’re at Gold Strike. #
  • Happy Birthday, Waxy!! #
  • Packing up to leave. When will I learn to pack light? #
  • Peche Iambic? Is that a new kind of poetry? #
  • Just breezed past Barstow. I never realized how small it was until we drove 0.9 miles along Barstow Road. #
  • Just checked in at the Gold Strike in Jean. Decided it’s not worth the bother to drive into Las Vegas for dinner. We’ll buffet it here. #
